Description

VSG stands for Virgin Sun Grown, the sun-grown Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper Ashton debuted in 1999. Made by the Fuente family in the Dominican Republic, the Ashton VSG Robusto sets that dark, oily wrapper over Dominican binder and filler aged four to five years, a full-bodied smoke.

The flavor usually runs to black pepper, espresso, cedar, and a dark, sweet-earth base that holds the full strength steady. At 5 1/2 by 50, the robusto keeps that intensity in a standard, manageable length.

Given the body, it leans toward later in the day or after a meal. It is available as singles or boxes of 24, and a single is a sensible way to gauge the strength first. A full-bodied Dominican robusto built on well-aged tobacco.

Pairs well with bourbon, espresso, or tawny port.
