54 Ring Gauge Cigars
A 54 ring gauge cigar is 21.4 mm thick, or 0.84 inches. Ring gauge is measured in sixty-fourths of an inch, so 54 means 54/64 across. To convert any ring gauge yourself, divide by 64 for inches or multiply by 0.397 for millimetres.
For reference: a 50 is 19.8 mm, a 52 is 20.6 mm, a 56 is 22.2 mm, a 60 is 23.8 mm, and a 64 is a full inch at 25.4 mm.
Fifty-four gives a fuller, cooler draw without going all the way to a gordo. More filler sits under the wrapper, so blends tend to taste rounder and a little sweeter than the same tobacco at a 50. It suits full-bodied Nicaraguan blends particularly well.
A 54 is near the upper limit of many standard guillotine cutters, so check yours before you buy.
