From AJ Fernandez, the H. Upmann by AJ Fernandez Sunrise Robusto is a Connecticut-wrapped robusto, handmade in Nicaragua. AJ Fernandez learned to grow and blend tobacco from his grandfather in Cuba before building one of Nicaragua’s most sought-after factories.

It blends an Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper over a Nicaraguan binder and filler at a medium body, leading with cream, cedar, blanched almond, and a gentle white-pepper snap. At 5 by 52, it burns cool and even.

Mild is not the same as simple. A good shade wrapper carries cream, cedar, almond and a faint white pepper on the finish, and because there is no maduro sweetness to hide behind, any flaw in the filler shows immediately.

Pairs well with coffee, cream ale, or amber ale.
