Oliva’s reputation rests on a single cigar: the Serie V Melanio, named Cigar Aficionado’s Cigar of the Year in 2014. It honors Melanio Oliva, who first grew tobacco in Cuba back in 1886, generations before the family would put down roots in Nicaragua. Gilberto Oliva and his son founded Oliva Cigar Co. in 1995, rolling at first inside Plasencia’s factory before building their own.
Their style is full-flavored Nicaraguan puro, anchored by dark, sun-grown ligero. The Serie V made their name, while the milder, Cameroon-wrapped Serie G and the Connecticut Reserve round out the range. The family sold to Belgium’s J. Cortès in 2016 but stayed on to run things. Reliable from one stick to the next, Oliva cigars are some of the best value in Nicaraguan tobacco.
