52 Ring Gauge Cigars
A 52 ring gauge cigar is 20.6 mm thick, or 0.81 inches. Ring gauge is measured in sixty-fourths of an inch, so 52 means 52/64 across. To convert any ring gauge yourself, divide by 64 for inches or multiply by 0.397 for millimetres.
For reference: a 50 is 19.8 mm, a 54 is 21.4 mm, a 56 is 22.2 mm, a 60 is 23.8 mm, and a 64 is a full inch at 25.4 mm.
Fifty-two is a touch fuller than the standard 50 and has become the default for a great many modern blends. The extra width cools the draw slightly and brings the filler forward without losing the wrapper’s character. It is the usual gauge for a torpedo and for many toros.
Most standard cutters handle a 52 without trouble.
