50 Ring Gauge Cigars
A 50 ring gauge cigar is 19.8 mm thick, or 0.78 inches. Ring gauge is measured in sixty-fourths of an inch, so 50 means 50/64 across. To convert any ring gauge yourself, divide by 64 for inches or multiply by 0.397 for millimetres.
For reference: a 52 is 20.6 mm, a 54 is 21.4 mm, a 56 is 22.2 mm, a 60 is 23.8 mm, and a 64 is a full inch at 25.4 mm.
Fifty is the most common ring gauge in premium cigars and the reference thickness for the two most popular shapes, the robusto at 5 x 50 and the toro at 6 x 50. It balances wrapper against filler evenly, so the blend tastes the way it was designed to, with the wrapper’s spice still clearly present.
