Churchill Cigars
A churchill cigar measures 7 inches by a 47 ring gauge, which is 178 mm long and 18.7 mm thick, and it smokes for 75 to 120 minutes. Plan on an hour and a half.
Named for Sir Winston Churchill, who was rarely seen without one, it is the classic long format and the longest size most brands make as standard. Lengths run 6 7/8 to 7 1/2 inches, and some houses stretch the ring gauge to 52 while keeping the name.
Length, not thickness, is what gives a churchill its character. Seven inches of tobacco lets a blend move through distinct stages, so the final third rarely tastes like the first. The relatively slim 47 ring gauge keeps the wrapper’s contribution high, which is why a churchill often tastes more defined and more aromatic than a thicker cigar of the same blend.
