La Aroma de Cuba
Despite the name, La Aroma de Cuba is a Nicaraguan cigar. It began in Cuba in the late 1800s and was a favorite of a young Winston Churchill, then faded from the market for decades. The Levin family behind Ashton revived it and, in 2009, handed production to José “Pepín” García and his son Jaime in Estelí, Nicaragua.
The Garcías pour their own Cuban heritage into Nicaraguan tobacco, rolling in the traditional entubado style and finishing with a Cuban triple cap. Its original line is medium-bodied under a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, all cocoa, cedar, and spice. Mi Amor, wrapped in dark Mexican San Andrés leaf, runs fuller and was named Cigar Aficionado’s No. 2 Cigar of the Year.
