A 56 ring gauge cigar is 22.2 mm thick, or 0.88 inches. Ring gauge is measured in sixty-fourths of an inch, so 56 means 56/64 across. To convert any ring gauge yourself, divide by 64 for inches or multiply by 0.397 for millimetres.
For reference: a 50 is 19.8 mm, a 52 is 20.6 mm, a 54 is 21.4 mm, a 60 is 23.8 mm, and a 64 is a full inch at 25.4 mm.
Fifty-six sits between a toro and a gordo. It is thick enough to burn cool and slow and to push the filler forward, but still short of the full 60 that some smokers find unwieldy. Expect a rounder, less spice-driven version of whatever a blend does at a 50.
