60 Ring Gauge Cigars
A 60 ring gauge cigar is 23.8 mm thick, or 0.94 inches, just under a full inch. Ring gauge is measured in sixty-fourths of an inch, so 60 means 60/64 across. To convert any ring gauge yourself, divide by 64 for inches or multiply by 0.397 for millimetres.
For reference: a 50 is 19.8 mm, a 52 is 20.6 mm, a 54 is 21.4 mm, a 56 is 22.2 mm, and a 64 is a full inch at 25.4 mm.
Sixty is the thickest size in common production and the defining measurement of the gordo. More filler sits under proportionally less wrapper, and because the wrapper carries much of a blend’s spice, a 60 usually tastes rounder and less sharp than the same tobacco in a slimmer cigar. The wide foot pulls more air, so the burn stays cool and slow. Expect 75 to 105 minutes in a six-inch length.
Two practical notes. A 60 needs a wide-gauge cutter, since many guillotines stop near 54. And the hundred ring gauge cigars you may have seen are a novelty at 1.56 inches or 39.7 mm across, not something in regular production.
